5 Warning Signs Your Electric Motor Needs Repair
Don't Wait Until It's Too Late
Electric motors power everything from conveyor belts to HVAC systems. When they fail, production stops and costs skyrocket. At All City Electric Motor, we've seen thousands of motors come through our shop — and most catastrophic failures could have been prevented with early detection.
Here are the five most common warning signs that your electric motor needs professional attention:
1. Unusual Vibration or Noise
If your motor suddenly gets louder or starts vibrating more than usual, something is wrong. Common causes include worn bearings, misaligned shafts, loose mounting bolts, or rotor imbalance. Don't ignore excessive vibration — it accelerates wear on other components and can lead to complete motor failure.
What to do: Shut down the motor safely and schedule an inspection. Our technicians can diagnose the root cause and perform precision balancing or bearing replacement.
2. Overheating
Motors are designed to run warm, but excessive heat is a red flag. If you can't comfortably hold your hand on the motor housing, it's likely running too hot. Overheating can be caused by overloading, poor ventilation, voltage imbalance, or insulation breakdown.
What to do: Check the ambient temperature and ensure adequate airflow around the motor. If the problem persists, bring it in for a winding resistance test.
3. Intermittent Starting or Stalling
A motor that struggles to start or stalls under load may have worn brushes (in DC motors), damaged capacitors, or winding issues. This is especially common in older motors that have been running for years without service.
What to do: Have the motor tested for insulation resistance, winding continuity, and capacitor health. We offer free diagnostics on most motor types.
4. Visible Damage or Corrosion
Check for cracked housings, corroded terminals, discolored windings (visible through vent holes), or burnt smell. These are signs of severe wear or environmental damage that require immediate attention.
What to do: Do not continue running a visibly damaged motor. Transport it to our shop for a full teardown inspection.
5. Increased Energy Consumption
If your electricity bills are climbing without explanation, inefficient motors could be the culprit. As windings degrade and bearings wear, motors draw more current to maintain the same output — wasting energy and money.
What to do: Have us perform an efficiency audit. In many cases, a professional rewind can restore a motor to near-original efficiency at a fraction of replacement cost.
Prevention Is Always Cheaper Than Repair
Regular maintenance — including vibration analysis, insulation testing, and lubrication schedules — can extend motor life by years. At All City Electric Motor, we recommend annual inspections for critical motors and semi-annual checks for high-duty applications.
